Cutting Edge

So I'm only about 20 years behind the times... I've just started a blog. I think this XKCD captures my attitude nicely:

For ages I've wanted a place to publish things that other people might conceivably want to read, but some annoying mix of perfectionism, poor organisation and inertia has meant I never did it. Well, here it is. I might well migrate the content somewhere else eventually, once I get my ideal setup sorted. But as the saying goes: "the best is the enemy of the good".

[UPDATE: next Whit Friday date added: 13th June 2025] While I've been finishing off my reviews of the Eurovision 2024 Grand Final acts, it occurred to me that the *other* competitive music event that I like to geek out over happens this week, and that perhaps it's worth a few words in this blog. What am I talking about? It's the annual Whit Friday march contests . I'm fascinated by this because it's such a local and specific cultural phenomenon, something genuinely unique, and something I've participated in before as a player, albeit 3 decades ago. Eurovision 2025 song (p)reviews: part 6/7 (Austria, Georgia, Sweden, UK)

Well, it's been a while - over a month, in fact, since I last posted any reviews. Thankfully that's because my spare time has lately been taken up fulfilling some other Eurovision-related ambitions, namely researching for some of the Overthinking Eurovision content on YouTube and doing some musical arrangement work. There's plenty to say about the 4 songs below and so I've had to self-edit quite a lot in order to make the reviews at least readable. For Sweden in particular, I've got a whole other post (possibly a series of posts) lined up, based solely on things I want to write about but that would turn a song review into an essay. Eurovision 2023 roundup Part 1: the year I cared about the Semi-Finals

This year, I became a true Eurovision fan. Anyone who's spoken to me in the last 2 months, or read my previous gig review , or my analysis of Australia's entry , knows I became an instant and absolute Voyager fanboy because of this year's contest. But having come for the prog metal, I stayed for the whole varied flamboyant mess, which this year included so many other things I like: flamenco, dark electronic dance music, a good clutch of strong vocalists, weird song concepts, contestants doing covers of each other's songs, and stupid but wholesome social media nonsense. It's getting on for 2 weeks after the 2023 Eurovision Grand Final and I'm still thinking about it.
